Sepia toning photographs is one of the most popular and most appealing effects for a photographer. This effect adds an old-fashioned feel to your photos, and also gives a warmth and depth to pictures that black and white does not.
To make a sepia picture on Photoshop, all you have to do is follow these instructions:
- Open the image in Photoshop.
- If the image is in color, go to Image > Adjust > Desaturate and skip to step 4.
- If the image is in grayscale go to Image > Mode > RGB Color.
- Go to Image > Adjust > Variations.
- Move the Fine<--> Coarse slider down one notch less than the middle.
- Click on More Yellow once.
- Click on More Red once.
- Click OK.
If you are using Picasa Software:
- Open the image in Picasa
- Go to Effects
- Click on Sepia
If you have a Flickr account, you can also edit pictures on Picnik.
Above your picture on Flickr, click on "edit photos"
Then:
1. When the Picnik editor opens, click on 'create'
2. Click on 'effects'
3. Scroll down to 'sepia' ~ when you click on it, you can select the sepia tone you like.
4. Click on 'apply' = your picture is now sepia-toned. It is fun to experiment with other effects in Picnik on your sepia picture, like 'boost' and 'lomo-ish' and 'orton-ish.' Picnik is great because it is very user-friendly and it is easy to try a variety of different effects before you save your final image.
5. When you save your picture on Picasa, it will then show up on your Flickr page.

Here are some of my favourite sepia sites:
Sepia Scenes on Blogger (where you post your sepia-toned pictures on your own blog, then link them at this blog)
Sepia Scenes on Flickr (where anyone with a Flickr account can join this group and post one sepia-toned picture each day)
Have fun editing some of your pictures into great sepia scenes!
